Engine 611 — Big-City Firepower, Mountain-Sized Maneuverability

2020 Ford F-550 | Custom Fire Engine

Response Type: Primary All-Hazards Response | Structural Firefighting | Emergency Medical Services | Rescue Operations

Engineered for the Community We Protect

Not every community can be effectively protected by a conventional full-size fire engine. The unique geography of the Broadmoor area, with its winding residential streets, steep grades, tight intersections, and homes constructed along the mountainside, demands an apparatus capable of delivering exceptional firefighting performance without the limitations of a large commercial fire engine.

Engine 611 is Broadmoor Fire Rescue's primary all-hazards response apparatus, combining the capabilities of a modern structural fire engine with the maneuverability of a Ford F-550 chassis. Designed to meet the specific challenges of our response district, Engine 611 provides firefighters with a powerful, versatile, and highly capable emergency response platform.

What makes Engine 611 especially remarkable is the amount of firefighting capability packed into its relatively compact design.

Full-Size Pumping Power in a Compact Apparatus

At the heart of Engine 611 is its Darley fire pump, rated at an impressive 1,500 gallons per minute (GPM). This pumping capacity is comparable to that of many full-size municipal fire engines, providing substantial water delivery capability from an apparatus built on a much smaller chassis.

The significance of this design cannot be overstated. While conventional engines often require considerably larger platforms to accommodate their firefighting systems, Engine 611 delivers the pumping performance expected of a modern structural engine while maintaining the agility needed to operate throughout Broadmoor's challenging residential environment.

Engine 611 carries 305 gallons of onboard water, providing an immediately available supply for initial firefighting operations. Once connected to an established water source, its high-capacity pump can support sustained fire suppression operations, multiple hose lines, and other demanding fireground water delivery requirements.

The apparatus is also equipped with a Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS), which introduces compressed air into a water-and-foam solution to produce firefighting foam. This system allows crews to apply foam with improved surface coverage and adhesion, particularly useful for certain combustible materials and fire conditions. CAFS provides firefighters with an additional suppression option while supporting efficient use of the apparatus's available water supply.

Built to Navigate Where Larger Engines Struggle

The true advantage of Engine 611 becomes apparent when responding through Broadmoor's hillside neighborhoods.

Many residential properties within the district are accessed by narrow streets, sharp curves, steep driveways, and winding roads that present significant maneuvering challenges for traditional fire apparatus. A full-size engine's longer wheelbase, wider turning requirements, and overall dimensions can limit its ability to negotiate these routes efficiently.

Engine 611's Ford F-550 chassis offers a shorter wheelbase, tighter turning radius, and more compact overall footprint. These characteristics allow the apparatus to negotiate challenging corners, approach confined residential access points, and travel steep roadway grades with greater flexibility than many larger engines.

This is especially important when seconds matter. An apparatus that can maneuver efficiently through the community's road network can reduce delays associated with difficult turns, restricted clearances, and limited access.

Unlike Utility 650, which is designed for more remote mountain trails and off-road operations, Engine 611 is the department's primary response vehicle for emergencies throughout the developed portions of the district, including hillside residential neighborhoods.

Designed for More Than Fire Suppression

Although its pumping system is one of its most impressive features, Engine 611 serves a much broader role within Broadmoor Fire Rescue.

As the department's primary all-hazards apparatus, it responds to structural fires, emergency medical incidents, vehicle accidents, rescue situations, and other emergencies requiring firefighters and specialized equipment.

The apparatus carries the equipment necessary to support initial incident operations, allowing responding personnel to assess conditions, address immediate hazards, and begin emergency operations upon arrival.

Its combination of fire suppression capability, equipment storage, and mobility makes Engine 611 an exceptionally versatile resource. Rather than relying on a larger vehicle that may face access restrictions, the department can deploy a compact engine capable of handling a wide range of emergencies without sacrificing one of the most important features of a modern fire engine: high-volume pumping performance.

A Fire Engine Designed Around Our Response District

Engine 611 represents a deliberate approach to apparatus selection. Instead of choosing a fire engine based solely on size, Broadmoor Fire Rescue operates equipment suited to the geography, infrastructure, and emergency response needs of the community.

Its 1,500 GPM pumping capacity delivers the water-moving capability of many substantially larger fire engines. Its 305-gallon tank and compressed air foam system provide options for initial fire attack, while the Ford F-550 chassis allows firefighters to navigate the narrow, winding, and steep roadways that characterize portions of the district.

For Broadmoor Fire Rescue, Engine 611 demonstrates that effective emergency response is not determined by the physical size of an apparatus, but by how well its capabilities match the environment in which it operates.

Engine 611 delivers the firefighting power of a full-size engine with the agility of a smaller apparatus—an ideal combination for protecting the unique communities along the foothills of Cheyenne Mountain.
